Gout

Gout is a form of arthritis that results from build-up of uric acid in the body and the joint. This can occur when the body struggles to eliminate uric acid through the kidneys and urine, or, when the body produces too much uric acid.

Gout usually can be managed with proper anti-inflammatory medication, to treat the acute pain, swelling and inflammation. If the gout attack occurs in the toe, it will help to elevate the foot, avoid standing and walking, and wear only loose footwear.

A podiatrist will also be able to help manage the pain by adapting your footwear with orthotics or other devices to help redistribute pressure away from the affected areas

Custom shoes can also be prescribed by a podiatrist and can provide protective shields for your toes or padding to reduce friction.
